Life's One Guarantee: A Photo Project

Project Details
For this assignment, I had to capture ten to twelve photos and craft one narrative around the images. We were provided a list of words to choose from that would serve as the theme for the photo narrative. The two words I chose were waiting and shadows. The objective was to skillfully convey the essence of these words through the photos. We had the creative freedom to choose between color or black-and-white photography as long we maintained a consistent style throughout the entire project.
Waiting & Shadows
I titled this work "Life's One Guarantee" because it addresses the subject of human mortality. We all know that one day we will die, but the thought of actually dying is
incomprehensible for most. We tend to suppress these thoughts because they cause us stress and anxiety. However, acknowledging that we will one day die is healthy and causes us to appreciate life even more. I went to my local graveyard in this photo series because it is where one is "surrounded by death." When it comes to death, we are all waiting for our time. However, we treat death as a shadow looming large over our lives. In the photos, I tried to treat the topic of death with the seriousness it deserves. Nevertheless, my aim was not to be morbid. I tried capturing the beautiful aspects of a place surrounded by death, such as a graveyard. The shadows in the photos are meant to have a negative connotation, as most would expect. There cannot be shadows without light in the same way there cannot be death without life. It is the life one lives that is more important than death.
